I love this topic. The reason I started using essential oils was to get grounded, calm and more at peace. It’s also my main impetus for doing yoga. And, when the two worlds collide, it’s magic.
Energetically, the grounding oils can be used for stabilizing the root chakra. Check out my previous post for a good understanding of the importance of balancing this chakra. I am also hosting a zoom class on Yoga & the Chakras this Saturday where I will be joined by acupuncturist Kayo Malik. Together we will explore the energy behind the root chakra and ways to enhance its grounding quality.
To complement and expand on our upcoming zoom class, I thought I would speak more in depth about some of my essential oil recommendations for the all important root chakra.
This is one of my favorite oils. It allows my “windy” personality and fluctuating nature to become still and rest. Valor is composed of a mixture of oils, namely black spruce, camphor wood, blue tansy, frankincense and geranium. The tree oils may be responsible for imparting this oil’s grounding quality. Valor is touted for promoting positivity and encouraging confidence. Qualities that are definitely required if you want to feel more connected or grounded.
I diffuse Valor during my yoga practice as it has also known to be energetically aligning – its nickname is “chiropractor in a bottle.”
Also, called Khus oil, Vetiver essential oil is extracted from a clumpy, green grass native to India that can grow five feet high or more. Vetiver is in the same family as other grasses used for their essential oils, including lemongrass and citronella. Vetiver oil is quite fragrant, with a distinctive sharp and earthy scent you may recognize from men’s cologne.
The essential oil is distilled from the plant’s roots, which are aged before being soaked in water. The highly concentrated oil that is released is then skimmed off the top of the water. It’s used in many holistic practices for its soothing, grounding capabilities. Vetiver oil may help you if you experience anxiety.
I find Vetiver to be especially sedating. I add a couple of drops to my lotion and massage onto the bottoms of my feet before bed – particularly when I have a lot on my mind. My sleep is always deep and restful as a result.
