Is Water Always Healthy?

In general, of course it is.

But, it depends on when you are drinking it, how much you are drinking and the temperature of the water.

Ayurveda says that healthy water habits start with the temperature of the water. It should never be drunk with ice. Ice and extreme coldness will put out your digestive fire and hamper your digestion.

Similarly, drinking a glass of water right before or right after eating will slow down digestion as it dilutes the Agni or fire within.

This topic is a great transition from the 2nd sacral chakra I introduced last month. The sacral chakra is all about the flow of water while the 3rd chakra or solar plexus is all about the element of fire, physically, mentally and energetically.

Physically, it’s so important to honor your digestive system. In the upcoming posts I will give you some great Ayurvedic tips for preserving the all important quality of Agni or digestive fire.

In the meantime, drink up! Room temperature – or slightly cooler if it’s warm where you are living. If you are lucky enough to get fresh, clean water, please choose it.

Fun Fact: If you are ever in the Sedona area, Oak Creek Canyon has a sacred river gorge that runs along the Mogollon Rim in Northern Arizona and there you can find a public spring source called Harding Spring.

I’ll leave you with one last request: for a week or so experiment with drinking your water no sooner than 60 minutes before and after meals. If needed, it’s okay to sip a little along with your food.

I found that the timing of water intake has helped me to increase my Agni and my water consumption to about 6-8 glasses per day – improving my metabolism and giving me a softer, more gentler disposition.
