Detach from the Commotion

As we continue on our journey to the higher chakras, at one point we cross over into a new realm.

We leave behind the clatter and confusion – the things that distract and hold us back from connecting with our quiet selves. On the other side is greater access to our dreams, intuition and imagination.

Remember that the lower three chakras: the root, sacrum and solar plexus deal with our basic functions. They connect us to the earth, our desires and our power so that we can physically survive in this world. They give us the roots, inspiration and drive to ascend.

Further up the chakra ladder, the throat, the third eye and the crown chakra form our spiritual essence – our expressions of what we are. They are the more esoteric centers of energy that manage our inner communication, perception and connection to the universal energy.

The third eye or ajna chakra allows us to see things as they are meant to be seen – it is the link to the quiet voice of the soul. When we begin to attend to our third-eye, we find ourselves more lucid, balanced and clear.

Energetically, the third eye point is the meeting place of the three main chakra nadis: the ida, pingala and sushumna. The ida holds the feminine energy which is cool, receptive and nurturing in contrast to the pingala’s hot, assertive and masculine energy. But once these two opposing energies join and enter into Sushumna, you gain an inner balance that is new and clear. So that, despite the commotion happening outside, there is a certain space within that never gets disturbed.

You can practice the following poses to strengthen and support your third eye energy.

Tree Pose (with your eyes closed): a wonderful way to get more insight into this pose through balance.

Supported Seated Forward Bend: descend into a comfortable place and support your forehead to increase blood flow to the brain and become more inward.

Child’s Pose: make this as supportive as you can and cushion the forehead slightly – give attention to the third eye as you restore.

Shoulderstand: will definitely calm the mind and stimulate the flow of prana but also stimulates the pituitary and pineal glands – which are associated with the third eye energy.
